What is a milestone session?

Well, a milestone is a way to mark or celebrate a significant stage of development or change. So, a milestone session is usually done to commemorate this development or change. Generally, milestone sessions are used for babies to celebrate stuff like turning one ("Cake Smash"). There are plenty of other milestones to capture outside of childhood or birthdays. I have had the honor to do a "cancer free" session as well as countless anniversary sessions that all count as huge milestones as well.

What is a cake smash session?

THE BEST!! That's what! No but actually its pretty much exactly what it sounds like. Its a session where the baby (usually for their 1st birthday) gets to smash a cake for the first time! We do some portraits before they get cake (or an alternative) and then they get to have a blast smashing away. Its so fun, we plan a whole setup with a theme or colo scheme and decorations and I provide everything from decor to outfits. You only need to bring something if you feel inclined to.

when should i book my milestone/cake smash session?

My turn around time is usually around 3-4 weeks so, if you are hoping to use the photos for something such as an announcement or birthday post, for example, you want to try and schedule your session a few weeks in advance to ensure you get them back in time. If you're interested in a first birthday cake smash usually around the 11 month mark is when we want to try and get that session done. Now, if you are wanting your baby to have cake ON or closer to their first birthday OR you happened to have inquired later than recommended, no problem, I am generally able to expedite a small sneak gallery in a very short time frame when in a pinch.

Do I need to provide or bring anything?

Just the cake. Due to allergies I no longer offer the option to provide the cake. A small cake, no larger than 7" with a butter cream frosting is generally perfect. Please make sure it is room temperature at the time of our session and avoid using chocolate or red velvet cake as well as red, brown or black frosting as they tend to look like blood/poop. Now unless you want to or have items or outfits you want incorporated into our session I provide everything else we might need.

Do i get to choose the theme or colors?

Absolutely! The planning part of our session is totally a collab of our efforts, ideas and visions. If you don't have any ideas in mind I will help bring a vision together based on your baby's interests and personality. I also have a variety of dream setups I'd love to bring to life. If your vibe is more simple, our session does not have to be a big themed production at all. Just baby and then baby with cake.

what other kinds of milestone sessions do you offer?

Any type you can think of. Milestone sessions include but are not limited to; a 6 month session for your baby, literally any birthday or age can be a milestone, anniversaries, moving into a new home, getting your dream car, beating cancer, leaving a toxic relationship or starting a new beginning, job or business. Anything worth celebrating is considered a milestone.

How long does a session last?

Generally my full sessions are around an hour long. Sometimes we will go over this mark for various reasons and there is no extra cost for that. However, I find that Cake smash are usually closer to 45 minutes, its around this point babies start to lose interest in playing in front of the camera, especially for those who are on the move! For a cake smash we will do about 15 mins of portraits and then let baby go crazy with the cake for as long as they like.

Can the family join in? (kids/parents/everyone?)

Yes, but I find we are able to get the best results and the happiest most cooperative baby when we have a very mellow, low distraction environment. Siblings playing nearby waiting to join or finish often cause our star (the birthday baby) to want to join in their fun rather than sit for pictures. Also, too many faces cheering and trying to sing & dance smiles out of baby can often lead to an overstimulated meltdown. Trust me, even the most cheerful of babies have a limit, throw in a stranger with a camera telling them to sit still and a session wont last long. SO, yes mom(s), dad(s), siblings can join, but I recommend keeping the focus on the birthday baby and instead chat with me about bundling sessions for a discount or waiting until the very end of the session to bring the siblings in for fun!
